Waterless Coolant: Your Questions Answered

Waterless engine coolant (sold as Evans until 2026, now Hawk) raises a lot of the same questions. Here are the ones we hear most often.

Is waterless coolant really better than normal antifreeze?

For an engine that suffers in the heat or is worth protecting for the long term, yes. Because there is no water, there is no boiling below 180°C, no internal corrosion and no cavitation. It is not a cheap top-up fluid — it is a fit-and-forget upgrade for an engine you care about.

Do I have to remove all the water first?

Yes, and this is the one thing you cannot skip. Waterless coolant only works in a dry system. You flush the old coolant out with Hawk Prep Fluid before filling — our conversion guide walks through it.

How often do I change it?

You do not. Waterless coolant is a fill-for-life fluid. Because the system stays sealed and never boils off, it does not degrade the way water-based coolant does. Top up if the level drops, but there is no annual flush.

Will it run my engine hotter?

The gauge may read a little higher, and that is normal and nothing to worry about — it reflects that the coolant is carrying heat without boiling, rather than masking hot spots with steam. What matters is that the metal is protected and there is no boil-over.

Can I use it in an old classic with a brass radiator?

Yes — classic and vintage engines are exactly what it is made for. Classic Cool 180° and Vintage Cool 180° are formulated for these engines, and the lower system pressure is kinder to old hoses and cores.

Is it safe if it leaks?

Waterless coolant is less corrosive and runs at much lower pressure than a conventional system, so a leak is less dramatic — no scalding steam. As with any coolant, clean up spills and keep it away from animals.

What is the difference between Hawk and Evans?
