Bent stainless exhaust headers produced on a mandrel tube bender

Tube bending without the fumes: why Solform Gel is a smarter lubricant

If you bend tube for a living – performance exhausts, roll cages, handrails, hydraulic lines or agricultural frames – you already know a clean, wrinkle-free bend comes down to two things: the right tooling and the right lubricant. Millers Solform Gel is an oil-free, water-based tube bending lubricant that takes care of the second half of that equation, and it clears up a few long-standing headaches while it’s at it.

Why the lubricant matters in mandrel bending

In mandrel bending, a mandrel sits inside the tube right at the bend, supporting the wall so the outer radius can’t flatten and the inner radius can’t wrinkle or collapse. It works – but it generates a lot of friction, with metal sliding hard against the mandrel, the bend die and the wiper die. Without a lubricant that can carry that pressure, friction climbs quickly and you start to see scored bores, wall thinning, wrinkling and, at worst, cracked tube. Every one of those is scrap, and scrap on an expensive length of stainless or an exotic alloy is money straight in the bin.

A good tube bending lubricant has to cling to the mandrel under load without being squeezed away. That is exactly what Solform Gel is built to do: a non-drip gel that stays where you put it and needs only a thin film to work.

What is Solform Gel?

Solform Gel is a premium, oil-free, water-based gel developed to replace conventional oil- and soap-based lubricants in severe mandrel bending. Because it is water-based rather than oily, it behaves very differently on the shop floor – and that difference is where the real savings sit.

Weld straight after bending – with no fumes

This is the headline benefit. Oil-based lubricants leave a film that burns off when you weld, throwing up smoke and fumes and forcing you to clean the tube first. Solform Gel leaves no oily residue, so a bent tube can go straight from the bender to the welding bay – no smoke, no waiting, no extra handling.

No degreasing step

Because it is water-based, Solform Gel cleans off with water. That removes the solvent degreasing stage before welding, painting, plating or assembly, saving you time, solvent costs and a messy job nobody enjoys.

Longer mandrel life, less scrap, less mess

  • Longer mandrel life – strong film strength reduces wear on your tooling, so mandrels and dies last longer between changes.
  • Uses less lubricant – a thin, non-drip film is all it takes, so a tub goes a long way.
  • Cleaner workshop – non-drip means it stays on the mandrel, not on the floor, and cleans up with water.
  • Chlorine-free and easier to dispose of – it can be diluted and disposed of through wastewater streams, subject to local approval, which is a real plus for busy shops.

What it works on

Solform Gel is proven on stainless steel, aluminium and aluminised tube, and it suits everything from a manual bender to a fully automatic CNC tube bender. Typical work includes performance and OE exhaust systems, motorsport headers, handrails and guardrails, compressed-air and fluid-system pipework, and general fabrication.

How to use it

Apply Solform Gel through your bender’s own lubrication system or by hand directly onto the mandrel. It thickens under the heat and pressure of the bend to give reliable protection where it’s needed – and, again, a thin film is all it takes.

Stocked in Ireland

We’re the official Irish distributor for Millers Oils, and we keep Solform Gel on the shelf here in Co. Wexford in 15 kg tubs. That means no importing, no customs delays and fast delivery across Ireland and Northern Ireland. In fact it was a customer request that first brought Solform Gel into our range – and Millers rate it highly enough to give it its own dedicated guide.

Millers produce a very large metalworking range beyond this one product – neat and soluble cutting fluids, grinding, honing and forming fluids – and we can supply any of it to order. If you bend tube and want a cleaner, faster lubricant, order Solform Gel here or get in touch for trade and bulk pricing.
