Brake & Clutch Fluids

Brake and clutch Fluides

The most common types of brake fluid include:
  • DOT 3: Glycol-based, inexpensive, and widely used in older vehicles. It has the lowest boiling points and absorbs moisture from the air, causing its boiling capacity to drop over time. It is highly corrosive and will damage vehicle paint.
  • DOT 4: Glycol-based and features borate esters to achieve higher boiling points. It is standard for modern European vehicles and heavy-duty towing. Like DOT 3, it absorbs moisture and will peel paint.
  • DOT 5: Silicone-based and does not absorb moisture. It features an exceptionally high boiling point and won’t damage paint. It is primarily used in classic/vintage cars, military vehicles, and some motorcycles. Note: It cannot be mixed with any glycol-based fluid.

Important Rules to Remember:

  • Never mix silicone (DOT 5) with glycol-based fluids (DOT 3, 4, 5.1). Mixing them creates a gel that ruins the braking system.
  • Glycol-based fluids (3, 4, 5.1) can be intermixed, but doing so usually lowers the fluid’s high-temperature capacity to the level of the lower-rated fluid.
