HOW TO USE FE-123 RUST CONVERTER

When you receive your bottle of FE-123 it will have settled out due to the zinc content in the binder just give it a good shake every time you want to use it this gets everything into a creamy consistency. Like all water based coatings do not allow it to freeze.

Typically Fe-123 can be applied to the ginger rust on the surface of steel. Or rust pitted steel that has been power tool cleaned. On application by brush the Fe-123 will start to react with the fe within the steels surface this reaction will produce a hard black stabilised surface ready to paint. It does not need neutralising either.

Common problems that can stop the converter reacting

Two coats is not a good idea unless its obvious that you have missed a section. A second coat applied over a reacted coat will just turn a sort of toffee colour where the resin dries with nothing to react to. It will also go this colour if you apply it over a painted surface, any small rust spots on the surface of the paint should be spot primed by brush. There is no need to apply converter to a painted surface.

To enable the converter to work well do not degrease the area with a white spirit, diesel or paraffin as the oil in these products will prevent the Fe-123 from reacting.

Make sure to wash down and remove any grease from the surface prior to converting the rust as.

the grease will prevent the Fe-123 from reacting.

Make sure not to wire brush clean a dirty greasy surface as the wire brush will push grease and dirt into the rusty surface preventing the Fe-123 from reacting.

Use sparingly only enough Fe-123 is required to react with the surface of the steel. The Fe-123 is a surface treatment not a coating. A primer should be applied over the fe-123 as per you chosen paint system.

You can apply any of Rustbusters primers over an Fe-123 prepared surface.

We do not recommend Zinc rich coatings are applied over the FE-123 as the reaction and latex barrier have shut down the electrical connection with the steel that the zinc particles require.
