Automatic gearboxes are fussy about fluid — using the wrong type can cause slipping, harsh shifts or worse. There are three main types: conventional/multi-vehicle ATF for torque-converter automatics, CVT fluid for belt-driven continuously variable gearboxes, and DCT/DSG fluid for dual-clutch transmissions (VW/Audi DSG, Ford Powershift and similar).
